“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral”.
– Antonine de Saint-Exupéry
The What, Why, and How
Often, the concept of a goal with a target is confusing because it represents only one of the three components:
1. The What, which corresponds to the target
2. The How, the strategy
3. The Why, the vision
The definition of objectives should start from the vision to satisfy our innate need to have a purpose. When an objective is unclear, it is necessary to ask which of these three components has not been met.
The Levels
There is another element to be taken into consideration in the definition of clear goals: levels.
Each goal consists of a level:
- Personal: the what, the how and the why of the individual
- Team: the role of the people who play within the team to achieve the goal
- Organization: target, strategy and vision of the entire organization

It often happens that organization-level objectives are shared only with top management, generating a lack of long-term vision for players. Each of us needs to have a “higher-level” purpose, in order to then transform them into personal goals. This makes us feel part of something much larger than the sum of individual contributions. Once the vision is clear, we can move on to the definition of goal setting. Finally, the goal is divided into tasks and the strategy is created.
