A manager has to set clear goals for the employees, to inform them about their tasks and to keep them motivated because they understand the direction of their work.
The first of the 7 pillars of intrinsic motivation is to have ‘clear goals’. We define having clear goals using 3 questions: The what, the how, and the why. These are all related to clearly knowing why you are doing a task or assignment at your job.
- ‘The what’ should correspond to the target of your work. What is the target that you are trying to reach by working on this project, and is the goal of reaching this specific target clarified in collaboration with your manager?
- ‘The how’ is related to the strategy of your project. How are you going to reach the target that you set with your manager?
- ‘The why’ relates to the vision of what you are doing. Why is this project important, and how is it related to the direction of the company?
By knowing the what, the how, and the why, your work and projects are put into a specific context, and you quickly start to feel your impact and the value that you bring to the company.
